FD60 fire doors: what you need to know

FD60 fire door sets consist of a one hour fire door with frame and are available in pre-hung assembly form. It’s common to fit intumescent strips in the inner frame of FD60 fire doors, although these can be fitted into the door leaf, if preferred. An FD60 fire door is tested to meet the specifications laid out in BS476-22-1987 or BS EN 1634-1-2014, so buyers remain secure in the integrity of any fire door protection claims.

Testing of FD60 timber fire doors

FD60 fire door sets are subjected to a rigorous testing procedure to confirm the integrity of the one hour fire door standards are achieved. The testing process entails fixing each door set into a wall and then exposing each face of the door to the heat conditions present within a fire while observing the door for stability and integrity. The door set stability is deemed as a failure when it collapses. A combustible, fibrous pad is attached to the unexposed side of the door to test fire integrity; when this ignites the integrity of the door is compromised. Once a door set specification from manufacturers achieves the standards essential for FD60 certification, subsequent doors are manufactured to the same specification.

Intumescent Door Strips

All fire doors need to be fitted with intumescent door strips. They are designed to expand and fill gaps between the door leaf and door frame whenever they are subjected to excessive heat conditions. The expansion of intumescent door strips helps prevent the passage of fire and smoke to other areas of the building. Intumescent seals contain different types of expansion material which will expand at varying rates, such as sodium silicate or graphite, so it’s important to ensure the same types of seal are used when fitting doors or replacing seals. Where FD60 fire doors are fitted into existing door frames, checking the condition of any intumescent strips in place and replacing damaged strips is important for maintaining the correct level of fire protection.
