FD30 Fire Door Specifications
Most buildings today are designed with delaying the spread of fire from one area to the next in mind. The separate compartments of the building are linked by fire doors, which allow for traffic to flow through the building. The main two functions of fire rated doors are that they act as a barrier to stop fire spreading, and when the doors are opened, they provide an escape route.
A good fire door will delay the spread of a fire as well as the smoke, without causing problems to the movement of people. To ensure that happens, every fire door needs to act as a barrier to smoke and fire. Not all fire doors are the same however, and different requirements will be in place depending on the location of the door and the fire hazards within the building.
Fire doors break down into two main categories: FD30 doors and FD60 doors. The difference between the two is that FD30 doors essentially means 30 minute fire doors, and FD60 doors means 60 minute fire doors. FD30 doors provide 30 minutes of fire protection, and FD60 doors provide 60. Here we’re taking a look at FD30 doors and their specifications.
Testing FD30 doors
To correctly determine the rating of a fire door, manufacturers must have the fire door assessed through a test procedure. The test is carried out on the complete assembly of the door along with all the hardware. That means the doorframe is included in the test as well as any hinges, locks and latches. Before the test begins, the fully assembled door is fixed within a wall, so that it represents its use. Once fixed, one face of the door, hardware and the doorframe are exposed to the type of heat conditions you would expect in a fire. As this happens, the door’s integrity and stability is observed. In order to be classed as an FD30 door, the integrity and stability of the door has to withstand fire for 30 minutes.
FD30 door specifications
Aside from offering 30 minutes of fire resistance in a test, there are specifications an FD30 door must have. Firstly they must be 44m certified core and meet standards set by the BSI, there has to be intumescent strips in either the door or the frame, the FD30 door must also be available as a pre hung assembly and it needs to have certified glazing (insulating/non-insulating).
All of our FD30 doors have been rigorously tested and meet the required safety standards. If you have any questions about FD30 doors or any of our doors for that matter, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
