Terminology
Undercut – The gap below a door leaf.
Left Handed/Left Hand Hung – Pulling the door towards you, you can see the hinge knuckle on the left side.
Right Handed/Right Hand Hung – Pulling the door towards you, you can see the hinge knuckles will be on the right edge.
Double Swing – The door will be on pivot hinges or “Bommer” hinges that swing both ways.
Anti-Ligature – Design to prevent trapped fingers at the hinge side of a door.
Anti-Barricade – Enable inward opening doors to be temporarily opened outwards. Primarily used in education and healthcare where vulnerable people might collapse against the door, eg: inside a toilet cubicle.
Equal pair – Double doors where both leaves are the same width.
Unequal Pair/Leaf and A Half – Double doors where the slave door is smaller than the main door.

Is it acceptable to put metal faces on fire doors?
Without specific fire test evidence the answer is no. In general, even face fixed kick plates and push plates must not exceed 30% of the door leaf area but you must always check the specific assessment for the permitted percentage that is allowed.
A joinery subcontractor has supplied an X Ray doorset manufactured by applying lead sheet to a fire rated door and is claiming the door is still fire rated, is this correct?
Certainly not. Applying lead sheet to the face of a fire door will likely invalidate the fire test evidence. Furthermore, precise standards of lead barrier must continue throughout the door including the lock, the frame and the architrave in order to block these very harmful rays.
One leaf of a fire rated pair has been damaged, can we replace the damaged leaf only and still maintain the fire rating?
Unless you can obtain the replacement leaf from the same manufacturer who supplied the original pair it would be difficult to guarantee the fire certification. There are several cores on the market and without knowing which one has been used we would recommend both leaves should be replaced.
Why should I specify third party certification?
A third party accredited scheme such as the BM TRADA fire door scheme audits its member companies both by inspection and audit tests of products to ensure products are manufactured correctly and standards are met.
We have received a pair of doors from another supplier and the veneer is not book matched?
Many suppliers work with pre manufactured standard doors and with regards to pairs just pull the next two off the pile. At Enfield Speciality Doors we manufacture doors to order and we assemble a complete set of veneers for each job, pairs are supplied book matched as standard.
We require FSC® certification, our supplier claims they have obtained material from FSC® sources but do not have FSC® Chain of Custody certification themselves, is this acceptable?
No, each part of the chain must have their own certification, if the chain is broken so is the certification. Companies with FSC® Chain of Custody certification are audited to ensure procedures and standards are maintained.
What is the maximum gap allowed to the bottom of fire doors?
Generally the maximum gap allowed between the bottom of fire doors and none combustible thresholds is 10mm, for fire and smoke control doors then the gap should be no greater than 3mm, however it is always advisable to check the specific assessment package for the doors that are been used.
I have broken a piece of glass; can you supply a replacement piece?
Yes, however, if this is a fire or acoustic rated application we will need to know the rating. In the case of a fire door, the fire gasket must be replaced also and the work must be carried out by a qualified person.
Can you tell what the fire rating is for an existing door?
If you can provide the thickness of the door along with the full specification of the installed fire strips then we could estimate this but without knowing the composition of the core or the specification of any glass and gaskets, we could not guarantee a fire rating.
