Why Opt For Soundproof Doors In Your Home

There are many aspects in everyday life that can cause stress and upset – noise pollution is one of those issues. Whilst noise pollution in the workplace is often identified and accommodated for, it is not always the case in your home. Aside from any ‘outside’ noise like traffic, construction, neighbours and such, there are many internal sources of ‘unwelcome’ noise that can disturb your calm. Music or TV from an adjoining room, household appliances such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and even other people’s conversation can all be contributory factors to the problem. There are different ways to reduce this internal noise, but an often-overlooked aspect is the construction of your internal doors.

Here is some information that may make you consider replacing your existing internal doors with more efficient soundproof doors:

Soundproof Doors

There are good reasons to consider the installation of soundproof doors in your home. Excessive sound transmission in your house can occur when the walls and ceilings of the building are too thin. This is often down to the actual drywall not being thick enough, but interior doors also cover a substantial area of dividing walls between rooms and can prove to be ‘weak points’ with regards to sound travel. If the door has a hollow core, as is usual in today’s new-build homes, then the likelihood is that they will not provide substantial soundproofing around the house. You can greatly improve the soundproofing within your home with the installation of solid-core acoustic doors.

Sound within a home environment is measured by the assignment of STC (Sound Transmission Class) ratings for various elements and features in the home. For example, a hollow-core door has a rating of STC 20-25, a standard interior wall at STC 33, an interior wall with a double layer of drywall that is insulated at STC 45, whilst a solid-core wood soundproof door would be STC 55-60. So you can see the quite considerable difference that solid acoustic doors can make in your home.

Replacing Internal Doors

It is usually a straight-forward process to source and replace existing internal doors with alternative soundproof doors. Most established door manufacturers produce doors of the standard dimensions for a modern home and so the doors can simply be swapped in as replacements. You should be aware though, that the acoustic doors will be considerably heavier than the hollow-core doors you are replacing, so the supporting door furniture (hinges etc.) may also need to be replaced or reinforced. If the door fixtures and placements in your home are not of standard size, then many door suppliers can order custom-made soundproof doors to accommodate your requirements.

Additional Benefits Of Acoustic Doors

Aside from the obvious benefits of reduced noise in your house, installing acoustic doors adds value and attraction to your home – if you come to sell the property, a family may well be appreciative of the prospect of a quieter home environment whilst, with the growing trend of people working from home, then soundproof doors can be valuable assets.

Some people may think that acoustic doors may appear bulkier and ‘more industrial’ than standard interior doors and may, therefore, be unattractive or spoil the look of the home – this is simply not true – soundproof doors can extremely pleasing aesthetically. Acoustic doors are available in a variety of looks and finishes, from high quality veneers in a range of timber species, through different paint grades, to a substantial choice of durable laminate facings – speak to an established door manufacturer for information on all custom doors made to measure UK, and to ensure that the doors are manufactured to the industry-approved Quiet Mark standard.
