When Is An FD30 Fire Door Adequate?

The rules and regulations surrounding fire doors are complex and sometimes it is difficult to know which fire door is best used in which situation, in most cases 30 minute fire doors are sufficient, but in some cases you may need a fire door with a longer fire resistance.

What is an FD30 fire door?

FD30 fire doors are doors that have at least 30 minutes integrity in the case of the fire. Often 30 mins fire doors may have a longer resistance time than this 30 minutes but this is the minimum amount of time that doors in this classification can hold off fire.

Where can you used FD30 fire doors?

In general, FD30 doors tend to be used in domestic dwellings though they may also be used in certain commercial settings.  FD60 Fire Doors are more commonly used in commercial settings. As a guide, 30 minute fire doors in domestic properties should be fitted off any room where a fire may start – for example, rooms with electrical items, or open fires.

In England and Wales, building regulations require you to have a fire door if you have an opening between an integral garage and a main residence. They also require you to install fire doors off every habitable room in new build or renovated properties with 3 stories or more.

What Is The Difference Between FD30 Fire Doors and FD60 Fire Doors?

30 minute fire doors tend to be thinner than 60 minute fire doors – fire doors with 30 mins integrity tend to be 44mm in thickness, those with 60 mins integrity – tend to be 54 mm in thickness. Both FD30 and FD60 fire doors must meet certain standards to ensure that they are fit for purpose and will perform in the event of a fire.

The core of FD30 doors will conform to BS 476 Pt22:1987 or BS EN 1634-1:2014, and will contain intumescent strips in the frame or the door. All fire doors must be installed by a competent person.
