For the highest fire resistance, order bespoke 2hr rated fire doors

Responsible construction firms, facility managers and architects have never taken fire safety lightly. However, recent events and the growing amount of legislation that applies to construction and maintenance have added to the weight of this responsibility.

If you’re in charge of either building, renovating or maintaining public and multi-occupancy buildings, then you need to take steps to ensure maximum fire safety. Particularly for rooms where there is a fire hazard, such as commercial kitchens, boiler rooms or where flammable substances are stored.

In terms of entry and exit points, that requires commissioning bespoke fire doors, with the highest possible resistance to heat.

Fire door classification and testing

Fire doors are classified by how long it takes for heat to damage their structure, allowing fire to move from one space to another.

These British Fire Resisting Standards start with FD30. This means that standard fire doors have been tested and verified to be fire resistant for 30 minutes.

If you really want maximum control when a building is on fire, then you need 120 minute fire doors that maintain their integrity for a crucial two hours.

They have been stress tested according to the specifications in British Standards 476 part 22:1987, and this testing replicates a real fire. The door is exposed on one side to intense heat, and carefully measured on how well its materials and manufacture remain stable and intact.

Why that two hour window counts

These FD fire doors are the best choice for multi-occupancy or public buildings on several levels, or that are complex and large, for example. A 2hr rated fire door gives people a great deal more time to exit safely in the event of a fire. They also contain the fire long enough for emergency services to get to the scene.

This also means that 120 minute fire doors can minimise smoke and fire damage. The problem can be dealt with swiftly, avoiding having the fire rip through more of the building’s spaces and contents.

2hr rated fire doors are only as good as the fit

Clearly, to be effective, high resistance fire doors must fit the door frame precisely and sit within a frame that is properly and precisely designed for the wall space.

That is why commissioning bespoke fire doors makes great sense, leaving nothing to chance. Contact us to discuss our FD120 (2 hour) fire doors, and how they can be custom-made for your building, ensuring compliance and peace of mind.
