Some acronyms to remember when thinking about Fire Resistant Doors

In our last article we delved into some of the regulations again, and the acronyms BREEAM and CPET cropped up.  We thought that this time we’d spend a little time exploring each of them, as potentially useful background information, as well as FSC.

What is BREEAM?

BREEAM is the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings, with 425,000 buildings with certified BREEAM assessment ratings and two million registered for assessment since it was first launched in 1990.

It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation and has become one of the most comprehensive and widely recognised measures of a building’s environmental performance. It encourages designers, clients and others to think about low carbon and low impact design, minimising the energy demands created by a building before considering energy efficiency and low carbon technologies.

A BREEAM assessment uses recognised measures of performance, which are set against established benchmarks, to evaluate a building’s specification, design, construction and use. The measures used represent a broad range of categories and criteria from energy to ecology. They include aspects related to energy and water use, the internal environment (health and well-being), pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management processes.

What is CPET? 

This is another acronym that you might come across when thinking about fire resistant doors.  CPET is the Central Point of Expertise on Timber, run by LTS and Efeca, who are contracted by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.  They are responsible, amongst other things, for giving advice and information on how UK public sector buyers and their suppliers can comply with the Timber Procurement Policy.

And finally, FSC 

We live in a world of three letter acronyms (TLA’s) – the above two breaking the trend!

The last one we want to mention this time is FSC, which stands for the Forest Stewardship Council – an international non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting responsible forestry. FSC certifies forests all over the world to ensure that they meet the highest environmental and social standards.

Products made with wood and paper from FSC forests are marked with their ‘tick tree’ logo. When you see this logo, you can be confident that whatever you’re buying,  it won’t mean harming the world’s forests.
