What are flush doors?

There are many different types of door available, such as fire doors, steel doors or acoustic doors, and flush doors are another addition to this range. As with all varieties, flush doors have their own unique qualities that make them great for certain uses. Here is an overview of what flush doors are and different varieties.

What exactly is a flush door?

A flush door is a door that has plain facings on either side you approach it from. People tend to use flush doors for more “functional” uses rather than trying to make a statement. They are also more commonly used indoors rather than outdoors. Their design is normally very straightforward but practical. As you may imagine, flush doors have a completely flush surface.

Different types of flush doors

There are three types of flush door generally available, and here’s a rundown of each one.

Hollow core doors

Hollow core flush doors are hollow on the inside and are supported by two sections of plywood which are on either side of a frame. For added stability and integrity, there is often some kind of added support inside of the frame. This could be corrugated cardboard acting as a sort of honeycomb support system.

Stave core doors

Stave core flush doors are made up of a number of wooden slats which have been stacked upon one another.

Solid core doors

Solid core flush doors have a completely solid interior which is usually made of foam or low-density particle board. This is placed inside of the space and then often further insulated with plywood or laminate. If you are going to use flush doors for exterior purposes, then this is the type you would choose.
